ISPE Travel Grant Program: Building the Workforce of the Future

Student Travel Grant Program

Establishing an appropriately skilled and plentiful workforce for the future is one of the biggest difficulties facing international pharmaceutical corporations today. In the US alone, by 2025, 60% of the 3.4 million biopharmaceutical industry jobs could be vacant due to a scarcity of people entering the industry. The workforce composition and skills requirements are also changing due to technological innovations in drug manufacturing, such as automation and multifunctional manufacturing sites. There is a critical need for a robust global biopharmaceutical workforce to ensure safe, effective, efficient, and continuous supply of quality medicine for patients.

To overcome these barriers, the ISPE Foundation has established the ISPE Travel Grant Program, to attract, support, educate, and train talented young people entering the industry. Both students and young professionals can receive financial support to further their professional development and contribute to building our industry’s future workforce.

Women in Pharma: Empowering Women and Increasing Diversity

women in pharma
Women in Pharma Event Speaker

Today, only 28% of the engineers in research and development are women and they hold Board seats on only 17% of the top 50 pharma companies. Ethnically diverse Directors hold just 8% of those seats. This dearth of diversity “negatively impacts companies’ performance across the board. More diverse companies are better able to win top talent and improve their customer orientation, employee satisfaction, and decision-making, leading to a virtuous cycle of increasing returns” (McKinsey & Company). To create greater equality, opportunity, and corporate success, there is an imperative to increase the numbers of people from under-represented groups in the pharmaceutical industry.

Women in Pharma® provides women in the pharmaceutical industry professional training and education to foster mentorship and networking for women and ethnically diverse people, to drive their successful career progress. A community of WIP mentors, resources across all levels, and educational sessions will be an enabler for career success and work-life balance. Learn more about Women in Pharma.

Global Knowledge Exchange

As an ageing population and strong emerging economies are fueling a growing demand for medicines, drug production is moving into new markets and companies are adapting current facilities to keep pace with technological advances. With this growth comes new challenges.

Companies moving into these new markets must plan and deliver manufacturing processes and, to maintain established industry standards, the harmonization of regulations, scientific standards, and production quality are needed.

The ISPE Foundation plans to make ISPE’s highly regarded Guides available to emerging markets through the Emerging Markets Knowledge Exchange; and to train and harmonize global regulators in industry best practices through the Global Training and Harmonization Fund.

ISPE is best positioned to provide the critical transfer of professional knowledge, standards, and expertise to these markets, companies, and individuals to provide support in all these areas.
